Why Is RO Better?

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a technology used in water purification wherein a semi-permeable membrane is used to remove a wide variety of contaminants. A semi-permeable membrane lets water molecules to pass but filters out harmful elements. 

Reverse osmosis can remove up to 99% of salts, dissolved solids, heavy metals, chlorides, nitrates, and bacteria. This technology is used in the bottled water industry and also in water refilling stations.

RO utilizes a high-pressure pump to push the water through the semi-permeable membrane, leaving the majority of dissolved solids and salts in the “reject stream”. It is very useful in treating tap water and brackish water (water that is saltier than freshwater but less salty than sea water).

Water that has been desalinated, de-ionized, and demineralised after passing thru the RO membrane is called permeate water. On the other hand, water that has the contaminants that didn’t pass thru the semi-permeable membrane is called the reject stream.

What are the differences between RO and standard filtration? A standard water filter can remove impurities and particles. It is usually installed at the point of entry or main water line of a house. The filtration size ranges from 10 to 30 microns. Because it filters large particles only, the process is quicker (the average flow rate is 10 gallons per minute). The treated water can be used for bathing, washing laundry, gardening, and cleaning.

A reverse osmosis water purification system uses cross filtration. In this setup, water passes thru the filter with two outlets: water that is filtered goes one way, and the water that has the contaminants goes the other way. Cross filtration allows the water pressure to clear away any contaminant build up. It also keeps the semi-permeable membrane clean.

An RO system is highly specialized and can remove a broader range of impurities and contaminants to make water potable for drinking. The filtration size is 0.0001 microns. It means that virtually all impurities will be removed (dissolved salts, heavy metals, chlorine, sulfates, and nitrates). The reverse osmosis system ensures that your water is pure and safe to use.

Components Of Whole House RO System

A whole house RO system is used at the point of entry and is directly installed in the main water line. It is capable of filtering the entire water requirement for the house. On the other hand, an under sink water filter system is installed at the point of use. It is usually placed in the kitchen below the sink.

Pre-treatment

Pre-filters remove large particles and prevents fouling and scaling. Fouling is the accumulation of contaminants on the surface of the membrane. Reverse Osmosis (RO) Membrane

The RO membrane is responsible for filtering fine impurities and particles. The filtration size is 0.0001 microns, so it removes virtually all (95 to 98%) contaminants, chemicals, and bacteria. The two types of RO membrane are the spiral wound and hollow fiber. The recovery ratio (percentage of clean water produced compared to the original water feed flow) for brackish water is around 80%. The total dissolved solids in drinking water should not exceed 500 ppm (parts per million).

Post-filtration

After going through the pre-filters and RO membrane, water passes through the post-filters. The filters are made up of carbon granules. They remove unwanted tastes and colors to improve water quality.

Storage Tank

This is where water is stored after it has passed through the reverse osmosis filtration process. The purified water can now be used for drinking or cooking. There are several sizes for storage tanks, depending on the manufacturer.
